UK Porch Pirates - Thefts Increase

Theft of parcel at doorstep

The ongoing growth in online shopping is leading to an increase in package thefts (Yahoo news), with UK households facing an estimated £376 million in losses during 2024. Dubbed "porch pirates", thieves are capitalising on the common practice of delivery drivers who leave parcels unattended at front doors.

The problem is exacerbated by the pressure to meet delivery targets or commitments, often resulting in leaving parcels without ensuring anyone is at home to take them. This practice of “dropping and running” causes significant frustration for consumers and has led to calls for greater awareness of the risks. Research, sponsored by Descartes, revealed 67% of consumers had a problem with home deliveries over a 3-month period - Home Delivery Consumer Sentiment Study 2024 | Descartes Routing UK

When a parcel is stolen, it leads to frustration, loss of trust, and negative feedback. Businesses incur additional cost for replacements, refunds, and secondary deliveries. These costs can be eliminated with the use of order and delivery tracking software which enables an accurate ETA to be given to the consumer and to track the delivery as it is occurring. All helping to ensure the delivery takes place when the customer is home.

Order tracking software as a solution

Order tracking and delivery notification software mitigates the risk of package theft by providing customers with real-time updates on their deliveries along with two-way communication between the customer and the delivery driver.

Here's how to help combat porch piracy:

  • Real-time Notifications: Customers receive automated notifications via SMS/RCS or email at each stage of the delivery process.  For example - an order is created, the route is scheduled, the driver starts the route, driver is en-route, driver is arriving or the parcel has just been delivered or left in a safe place.
  • Estimated Arrival Windows: Notifications can include estimated arrival windows or precise ETAs, allowing customers to plan to be home to receive their package.
  • Branded Tracking Portal: Customers can access a web-based portal to view their order progress and track the delivery driver's real-time location on a map.
  • Two-Way Communication: Direct messaging is possible between the customer and the driver, allowing for clarification or provision of delivery instructions and adjustments to delivery arrangements.

Additional Measures

In addition to order tracking software, consumers can take steps to protect themselves such as installing security cameras, doorbell cameras, or providing a secure parcel deposit box. If a package is stolen, it is advised to contact the company's customer service department for a refund or replacement ASAP.

By combining technology with proactive measures, both businesses and consumers can reduce the risk of package theft, enhancing the overall delivery experience.
