Planning delivery routes around East London is going to become more difficult, despite a new route opening under the Thames River just east of the O2 Arena, the new Silvertown tunnel, running from the Greenwich Peninsula under the Thames to Canning Town, will have toll charges applied from 7th April 2025.
The new Silvertown tunnel will ease congestion at the Blackwall tunnel, but the Blackwall tunnel will also see toll charges applied at the same rate and from the same date as the Silvertown tunnel.
Both Tunnels are located within the London Ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ), so a non-ULEZ compliant vehicle could end up paying both the ULEZ charge and the tunnel toll if routes are not planned carefully.
Toll charges will be time-dependent and more costly during peak times. Monday to Friday the highest fees will be applied northbound between 6am and 10am and then southbound between 4pm and 7pm, with a lower fee being applied outside of peak times only between 6am and 10pm 7 days a week. No toll will be applied between 10pm and 6am.

Tolls for the tunnels will need to be paid to Transport for London (TFL) in the same way as for the ULEZ and the congestion zone via the TFL payment website.
Selecting the best vehicle for deliveries within the ULEZ, direction of travel and time of travel has become more important when delivering into or around the East of London.
Using delivery scheduling and route optimisation software to select the best vehicle, schedule routes and plan deliveries is the easiest way to plan multiple deliveries into these zones.
