A new report published by the Road Haulage Association (RHA ) has revealed the need for 200,000 new heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers over the next five years in order to meet demand. Having faced significant disruption in 2021, when adriver shortage led to empty shelves and wider supply chain disruptions, followed by a period of concerted effort to recruit HGV drivers and improve facilities on the road, the industry is still facing a potential shortage of drivers, due to an aging workforce.
The RHA report, highlights the aging workforce and challenges with attracting new drivers to the industry. With a significant portion of the current HGV driver pool nearing retirement age, the industry faces an ongoing shortage in the coming years. The report estimates that around 42,000 newly licenced HGV drivers will be required every year for the nxt 5 years to replace those retiring and leaving the industry.
With no end to driver shortages in sight, it is essential that operators retain drivers and get the most out of the drivers they already have whilst maintaining full compliance with drivers’ hours.
