In 2023 HGV registrations in the UK increased by 13.5%, reaching their highest level since 2019.
Growth was driven by companies investing in rigid trucks (up 14.7%) and articulated trucks (up 12.2%). Notably, demand for electric and hydrogen trucks surged by 265.6%, but only represent 0.5% of the market. DAF Trucks maintained its market leadership with a 30% share in the heavy-duty truck segment.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has emphasised the need for government support to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles, despite no incentives in the March budget statement. With the 2035 deadline for non-zero emission trucks approaching, the SMMT is urging both businesses and the government to take action for a smoother transition.
While investing in new, fuel-efficient and zero emission HGVs is a crucial step for any business, maximising their efficiency requires a holistic approach. Route optimisation software and GPS telematics can significantly improve the efficiency of any fleet and ensure they are used in the best way possible. These solutions will create optimised delivery routes that minimise travel time and fuel consumption for every delivery, while telematics will provide real-time data on driver behaviour and vehicle performance. This data can be used to identify areas for improvement, such as reducing idling or optimising route planning based on real-time traffic conditions.
Utilising these software solutions with your fleet will ensure that you are not just delivering goods efficiently, but doing so in a way that maximises profits and minimises your fleet’s environmental impact.
